Overview
What this trip is
The Kilimanjaro Rongai Route is the only route that approaches the mountain from the north, near the Kenya border. It is a gentle, peaceful route with very few people on it, providing authentic wilderness, high wildlife encounter chances on lower slopes, and spectacular open perspectives of Mawenzi Tarn and Kibo Peak. It descends on the south-east side via the Marangu route, giving you a complete traverse of the mountain.
Departure: Arusha or Moshi (Daily departures)
Highlights
- Untouched northern wilderness with lowest crowd numbers of all standard routes
- Gentler slope ascent ideal for trekkers seeking a less physically demanding gradient
- Spectacular camp beneath the dramatic jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak (4,330m)
- Dryer microclimate making it the best route during rainier shoulder seasons
- Traverse route: ascends from the north and descends on the south-east via Marangu

- Blue Monkeys
- Colobus Monkeys
- Duikers
- Buffaloes (lower slopes)
- Birds of Prey
