Which Type of Travel Bag Should I Bring?

Bring soft-shelled bags on your Tanzania safari! We kindly ask guests to limit their luggage weight to 15 kg (33 lbs) in a medium-sized soft duffel bag, plus one small piece of hand luggage (daypack).

You will travel in custom 4x4 Toyota Land Cruisers. While spacious and comfortable for game viewing, vehicle boot space is shared among passengers. Soft duffel bags squish easily into vehicle luggage compartments and small aircraft cargo holds (which strictly prohibit rigid hard-shell suitcases).

Pack a small day bag (15–20L) to keep at your seat during game drives for your camera, binoculars, guidebook, sunscreen, and water bottle.

Plastic Bag Ban: Tanzania has banned all single-use plastic carrier bags. Do not pack items in thin plastic grocery bags; instead, use reusable cloth tote bags or clear zippered travel organizers.

Which Clothes to Pack — Clothing Tips

Packing the right clothing ensures comfort through changing temperatures and terrain:

• The Right Colors: Neutral, light-colored clothing (khaki, beige, tan, olive, light brown) blends into the wilderness. Avoid dark blue and black (which attract biting tsetse flies in woodland zones like Tarangire), and avoid bright neon colors or white (which startles animals and shows dust). Camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in Tanzania.
• Bring Warm Layers: Inland temperatures drop rapidly after sunset and during 6:00 AM dawn game drives. High-altitude locations (Ngorongoro Crater rim at 2,300m, Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro) get very cold (5°C–10°C / 41°F–50°F). Pack a fleece jacket, windbreaker, and compact scarf.
• Sun Protection: Cool morning breezes can mask the strength of the equatorial sun. Always pack a wide-brimmed safari hat, polarized sunglasses, and SPF 50+ sunscreen.
• Footwear: Heavy trekking boots are not necessary for standard vehicle safaris. Pack comfortable closed walking shoes / sneakers for bush walks and sitting by the campfire, plus lightweight flip-flops / sandals for around the pool.
• Swimwear: Afternoon hours between game drives are warm and sunny. Most safari lodges have wonderful swimming pools overlooking the savannah, so pack a swimming costume.
• A Flash of Flare for Dinner: Evenings in safari lodges and tented camps feature romantic candlelit dinners under acacia trees and starry skies. Pack a casual, smart outfit to enjoy dinner in style.
• Modest Dress for Zanzibar & Villages: If visiting Stone Town, local spice farms, or Maasai communities, wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees.

Miscellaneous Items & Safari Gear Checklist

• Binoculars (8x42 or 10x42): Essential for spotting leopards in acacia branches and distant cheetah hunts.
• Camera with Zoom / Telephoto Lens (200mm–400mm+), extra memory cards & spare camera batteries (batteries drain faster in cold mornings).
• Power Plug Adapters: Tanzania uses Type D and Type G electrical outlets (230V / 50Hz). Bring universal adapters.
• Waterproof Dust Bags: Savannah dust is fine and pervasive; keep your cameras and phones protected in ziplock or dry bags during dry season drives.
