Itinerary
Day 1
Londorossi Park Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)
Morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Drive to Londorossi Park Gate for national park registration and climbing permits, then continue on to the Lemosho Glades (2,100m, 3 hrs). Begin your trek along lush, unspoiled rainforest trails where colobus monkeys and exotic bird species thrive. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) campsite for your first night under the stars.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) — 3 hrs hike / 2,100m to 2,750m
Day 2
Mti Mkubwa to Shira Plateau Camp 1
The trail steepens and leaves the dense forest behind, entering the giant heather and moorland zone. Cross several clear mountain streams and ascend the Shira Ridge (3,600m) before descending gently onto the vast expanse of the Shira Plateau. Camp alongside a mountain stream with spectacular open skies.
Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) — 5 hrs hike
Day 3
Shira Plateau to Shira Hut Camp
A gentle and scenic walk across the plateau leads to Shira Hut camp situated on moorland meadows beside a glacier-fed stream. A variety of short acclimatization walks are available across the Plateau in the afternoon, making this an essential and relaxing acclimatisation day with views of Kibo's western glaciers.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Shira Hut Camp (3,840m) — 1.5–2 hrs hike
Day 4
Shira Hut via Lava Tower (4,600m) to Barranco Valley
A key acclimatization day following the golden mountaineering rule 'Climb High, Sleep Low'. A rocky path leads east up towards the volcanic monolith of Lava Tower (4,600m) where you stop for lunch and acclimatization. Shortly beyond this, descend into the sheltered Barranco Valley beneath the impressive Barranco Wall and Heim Glacier.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Barranco Camp (3,950m) — 4–5 hrs hike (Ascent to 4,600m, sleep at 3,950m)
Day 5
Barranco Camp via Barranco Wall to Karanga Valley
Start the day with an exhilarating scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall (often called the 'Breakfast Wall') — not technically difficult and highly rewarding. From the top, traverse over scree slopes and rolling ridges to the Karanga Valley campsite nestled directly beneath the icefalls of the Southern Glaciers.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Karanga Valley Camp (4,000m) — 3 hrs hike (4.5 km)
Day 6
Karanga Valley to Barafu High Base Camp
The trail ascends a stark alpine desert ridge to a campsite situated at Barafu Hut. Barafu (meaning 'ice' in Swahili) is an airy, bleak location with little vegetation, perched on an exposed ridge with sweeping views of Mawenzi Peak. Early hot dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight summit bid.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Barafu Base Camp (4,600m) — 3 hrs hike (4.5 km)
Day 7
Summit Night: Barafu to Stella Point, Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Descent to Mweka
Wake up just after midnight (around 23:30) for hot tea and biscuits. Begin the steep, zig-zagging scree ascent through the freezing night towards the crater rim at Stella Point (5,725m, ~6 hrs). Witness a breathtaking sunrise over Africa before continuing along the snow-rimmed crater edge for 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa! Celebrate, capture lifetime photos, then descend back to Barafu for rest and hot brunch, followed by a further descent to Mweka Camp in the upper forest.
Meals: Breakfast, Brunch, Dinner
Stay: Mweka Camp (3,100m) — 11–14 hrs total walking time (Ascent 1,295m, Descent 2,795m)
Day 8
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Transfer to Moshi/Arusha
After a celebratory breakfast and mountain farewell songs with your guides, cook, and porters, enjoy a pleasant 3 to 4-hour descent through the lush tropical rainforest to Mweka Park Gate (1,600m).
